President's Ph.D. Scholarships 2023 are now available to international students. The scholarship allows for PhD-level programs in All Subjects taught at Imperial College London. The scholarship will expire on January 3, 2023.

Imperial College London offers a fully funded scholarship called the President's Ph.D. Scholarships. It enables international students to conduct a research project of their choice with the assistance of an excellent supervisor and participate in cohort-building activities with other President's Ph.D. Scholars. Imperial College London is a public research university located in London, England. Its history began with Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's consort, who envisioned a cultural district that included the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and royal colleges.

This competitive scheme has stricter eligibility requirements than usual, attracting candidates with strong academic credentials and promising research potential.

The scholarship is available for both full-time and part-time study.

Academic criteria


Candidates must have received, or be on their way to receiving, a first-class or equivalent in an undergraduate or integrated master's degree; and/or Candidates with a standalone Master's qualification must have achieved a distinction, or be able to provide evidence of high performance that will lead to a distinction.
This enables candidates who have demonstrated excellence at the Master's level but have not obtained a first-class undergraduate degree to apply to the scheme.

Candidates with a single undergraduate degree or an integrated Master's must still have received, or be on their way to receiving, a first-class or equivalent.

  1. Applications are welcome from talented candidates from Imperial College London, the United Kingdom, and around the world. There are no nationality restrictions, though some departments may be unable to support international candidates.
  2. The scheme is only available to new Ph.D. applicants. Current Imperial Ph.D. students are not eligible to apply for a President's Ph.D. Scholarship.

Application Procedure:

  • There is no scholarship application form.
  • You should apply for admission to Imperial through our online admissions system, and your department will recommend you for the scholarship based on academic merit and potential.
  • Scholarship-specific admissions instructions are provided below; you must also meet any additional application requirements specified by your department of choice.

Additional admissions instructions

The earliest start date for funded places for the 2023-24 academic year is 1 August 2023, and the latest start date is 1 November 2023.
When asked for a personal statement, you must include the following two-page document:
A personal statement should be on the first page (motivations for applying to Imperial and the scholarship, and any other supporting information not included elsewhere on the form that you feel will enhance your application)
Your research proposal should be on the second page. If your department shortlists you for the scholarship, you may submit updated versions of this statement if necessary following application submission. It is recommended that you write in the first person. When asked for the names of two academic referees, provide the names of people who can provide an academic reference in support of your application (e.g. your personal tutor or your thesis supervisor). Your proposed Ph.D. supervisor should not be included. You are encouraged to share your thoughts. This advice should be shared with your two referees, with special attention paid to the recommendation to use 'they/them' language (rather than gender pronouns).
